HOW SUPER ENERGY EFFICIENT CEILING FANS DIFFER FROM REGULAR CEILING FANS?

Ceiling fans are still the primary space cooling appliances in India. There are over 400 million ceiling fans in the country. They can be categorized based on their efficiency as:
– Regular Ceiling fans
– Energy Efficient ceiling fans

Regular Ceiling fans

Regular fans are conventional ceiling fans built with an AC Induction Motor (ACIM). Typically, they consume around 75W and some old fans may consume up to 90W. The vast majority of ceiling fans under use are these ceiling fans. The large ceiling fan manufacturers are still promoting these inefficient choices due to its low manufacturing cost and their lack of motivation to develop alternative technology which benefits everybody.
Disadvantage: 80-year-old technology, inefficiency, coil burning, unstable speed.

Energy Efficient Ceiling Fans

Energy efficient fans employ a minimum level of electronic technology to reduce power consumption. They are BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) 5 star rated fans and consume only 50W. They have an electronic step or an electronic fine-tuning regulator. These fans are the outcome of BEE standardization in energy rating for ceiling fans. Even in this case, the large manufacturers took an easy way out by utilizing the lenient tolerances of BEE. They rehashed the same regular ceiling fan with lower performance in terms of air delivery to bring out the energy efficient ceiling fan option in their repertoire.
Disadvantage: They don’t serve the primary purpose of the ceiling fan – thermal comfort. The air delivery is reduced to meet the low power consumption requirement.

Super Energy Efficient Ceiling fans

Super Energy Efficient ceiling fans use enhanced semiconductor technology and consume 35W or lesser power with no compromise in air delivery. These fans have a BLDC motor (Brushless DC Motor) with microcontrollers and save more than 50% of the power consumed by regular fans. In 2012, Superfan released India’s first super energy efficient ceiling fans and are still one of the premier BLDC ceiling fan manufacturers in India. Another brand of BLDC ceiling fan known as Gorilla fans (Atomberg technologies) matched Superfan’s performance of 35W a few years later.
